WILDLIFE FILES STARLINGS AUGUST 26 2009

Music by (c) Rob Elliott

I was chatting with a friend of the RSPB and what he told me, I was shocked to hear. I already knew that the Starling was on the decline, but I did not know that it has declined 70% over the past 20 years. This is very worrying. Reasons are mainly, the change in farming, use of pesticides and so on.

I have a tile missing on my roof, and have never repaired it because, and I am so happy to say, every year, Starlings nest in there ;) This year, they had four young ones, and in May, they left the nest and started to feed with the parent birds, in my garden. Today, they are still here, and their colors are changing, and its awesome to see this. I love to hear their noises and watch them at the feeders. It really does make me happy, also to see the others that have arrived to join the party. I love them to bits. I hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching.

Phil

  • A very underrated species,

    Regards Richard

  • You are Correct Richard, I wont repair the roof, they do no damage, I let them stay there ;)

  • It's like passenger pigeons... Once the sky was black with them...

  • I hear you Andy. I just hope we can stop the declines, its gonna be a bare and desert world if we dont.

  • Thanks Scotty. Yes my friend, it is sad and very true. People see loads where they are and think they are ok, but where there used to be thousands, there are very few now

  • Ironically in US they shoot them because they are danger to native birds, those birds have hard life

  • Seen less Starling flocks over the lakes at Fen Drayton Reserve this winter compared to previous years.
