The Nov. 2 election in Alabama led to a changing of the guard. For years Alabama's minority population, approximately 25% of the state, had been represented very well by the Democrats in the majority. But with Republicans, all of them white, taking control for the first time in 136 years there is a question of whether or not the African-American population in the state will be represented.
There's something to be said for moving "beyond race", but the Republican party continues to fight health care and jobs programs that are vital for struggling black communities. It may not matter whether or not the representatives are black, but it matters that they will continue to ignore the needs of the black community.
