In the EMS, dental, and medical profession, it's known as the '(fill in the title for the appropriate higher level education requirement) syndrome'. The usual one I hear is the 'Dr. Syndrome' but I've heard it called the 'God Syndrome' when the person under discussion is a doctor. The '___ syndrome' is the label given to the EMT, the dental assistant, the dental hygienist, the nursing assistant, the nurse, the individual who does not know or understand the limits of the education he/she has and who believes and acts on the belief that the knowledge, skills, and experience he/she has is at the same level as that of the years of study, training, and experience invested in the next professional title level. The individual with '___ Syndrome' may be below average with an out-of-control ego or may be above average in skills and competency but again a dangerous ego when that person has not had access to the same educational background recognized for the professional title. This person's defective ego is bolstered whenever entrusted with above level skills or a job or position giving that person power and control that can be used to harass/harm an upper level professional. Some of the skills we learn through our respective professional title school programs involve mastering some of the same skills such as IVs for paramedics, nurses, and doctors. A Rotation in the ER room involves the same setting for paramedics, nurses and doctors but even though in this setting we may be using the same learned skills such as IVs, we are in specialized learning programs - EMT-paramedic, nursing, physician, dental care in the hospital system. It's important to understand the boundaries for each occupational area regardless of what skills are shared. EMS and law enforcement share the same communications system and are often in the same setting such as a car accident. Law enforcement and medical personnel are in the same setting when they are at the scene of a car accident or in the ER but the training a police officer has gone through is very different from the training of a health care professional. Abuse, verbal and/or physical, including assault of a patient is UNacceptable in the health care profession and should be unacceptable but seems to be routine procedure for treatment of persons by police officers (often witnessed and NOT reported by EMS personnel). Neglect of a patient is UNacceptable by health care standards and neglect of a person's need for medical attention by law enforcement personnel should be as unacceptable as assault and battery of a person by law enforcement personnel and needs to be reported by health care professionals as the first step in stopping that abuse. The problem is that health care professionals are NOT protected from retaliation from law enforcement personnel and this retaliation can be ongoing FOR YEARS and increase exponentially in retaliation activity as witnessed in this video.
