OK, I said 181 miles and it's a little bit jerky. But my camera's battery was about to die.
What you see is WHRM, Wausau, WI's two HD Radio streams being received in the outskirts of Hermantown, MN, in the Duluth area about 179 miles to the west. WHRM's analog signal is transmitted with 82,000 watts, which means their digital signal most likely has about 800 watts of power. Not bad for a nearly 180 mile path!
The radio is a Sony XDR-F1HD, an amazing little box for both analog and digital. Antenna used is an APS-9B yagi mounted on a rotator at about 25 - 30' agl.
I live in Wausau and have toured the transmitter building. The transmitter tower is located on top of Rib Mountain. The antenna is half way up the tower at 446 feet. That puts the antenna at 1,080 feet high above average terrain. The transmitter puts out 81,000 watts of power. This station has a huge footprint.

This is why HD radio works on FM...but not on AM.

HD Radio DXing is going to get easy as soon as antennas become more available for the hobby. I have not got any HD radio tuners yet, but I am planning on doing it soon when I get more money in my budget. HD Radio for AM is getting easy as well and you can hear WCBS-AM in clearer than regular AM. If HD Radio FM DXing is possible then I will be able to hear the stations in clear from Sporadic E Skip if lucky.
