The Archus String Trio, playing on instruments of the New Violin Family made by luthier Robert J. Spear, plays the first movement of Haydn's Divertimento No. 19 in G major.
Haydn was a lifelong Austrian who spent much of his adult life composing for the Esterhazy family who were members of the Hungarian aristocracy. It is probable that this Divertimento was written for them. Divertimenti were incidental pieces usually composed as after-dinner or evening music. They are light-hearted in nature and usually lacking in formal structure. Although many were derived from Baroque dance suites, this one comes in a structured, three-movement symphonic form that was due, perhaps to Haydn's experiments in that genre. --W. H.
