Consumer advocate and Harvard law professor Elizabeth Warren addressed Monday how she felt about being passed up as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show.

The Bureau was created by the Dodd--Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act to regulate mortgages, credit cards and other financial goods and services. It will commence operation as an independent agency on July 21.

Warren first proposed the Bureau and helped set it up, but President Barack Obama nominated former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray to avoid a Senate confirmation battle.

"We would not have a consumer agency if it were not for President Obama," she said.

"I want to be real clear. The reason I can not run this agency is because of [Republicans]," Warren continued. "They have made it perfectly clear that they are not going to let this agency go forward if I am there. Fine, I can step away from this. What I care about is this agency."

Warren described Cordray as a "good man."

"I think it's time to take the fight straight to the Republicans," she added. "We need a director in place, that is the law, and we are not, not, not going to let the minority come in and dictate the terms of this agency -- rip its arms and legs off before it is able to help a single family."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said Monday that Republicans still plan to block the nominate of Cordray.

  • I LOVE Elizabeth Warren. She is such an amazing woman.

  • It's always like this. Democrats try to prevent corporations from taking advantage of people, and the Republicans come around and say that "It'll ruin the economy!" "We'll lose jobs!" or "We need to reign in our budgets!"

Seriously, guys, what did you do when Obama created the American Recovery and Re-Investment Act? Or when the Dodd-Frank Bill was introduced? Aloud you said above, but what you really meant was "We won't let this bill pass because . . . because . . . because you're a Democrat!"

That's obviously one of the only areas the govt. should be involved. In cases of fraud and theft.

  • People are being played, bickering of petty partisan politics. Blind allegiance towards an R or a D next to a politicians name. There is a lot we can all agree on but as long as both sides treat politics as a chess game to be won there will be no hope.

One side has a blind hatred of Obama, the other a blind hatred for Bush. No one really stops and realizes they are the same person on nearly every issue.

    Peace

    Prosperity

    Freedom

  • Does this mean we have to move to Massachusetts so we can vote for her?

  • @journeyer58 liberal loser

  • someone stole my pop's cellphone and ran up a $4500 bill with calls to Jamacia and England in less than a a week and my pops finally got the consumer protection agency get it back for him so even though I'm a Ron Paul libertarian I think the consumer protection agency is one program thats worth the money and we need people like her doing what they do.

  • This is the kind of woman you want running for government! Not Bachmann, not Palin, not O'Donell! She is smart, articulate, experienced, knowledgeable and goes straight to the point, she doesn't dance around the questions with rhetoric.

  • Yeah, then he brought in Larry Summers. Are you trying to fuck with me?
