This is what I managed to record of the tracking seminar at the North American International Democompo (NAID) in June of 1996. The seminar is being given by Andy Sega, a.k.a. necros in the demoscene. Tracking is a method of constructing music where coded piano roll style paterns are used to playback audio samples with desired pitch, volume, and effect values in as many 'tracks' as the hardware will allow. Necros demonstrates some intermediate techniques in a tracking program called Screamtracker 3.

  • I started tracking the year this video was made, and I still do once in a while. Thank god for DOSBox.

Tracking is insanely fun and I don't know if I'll ever be able to stop completely.

  • Nice, it's one of the other Andrew's from #trax :) I don't think I made it to this part of NAiD, though I was at "both", submitted in tracking compos (got 12th place, w00p), even DJ'd for an hour at the second one. This was a great thing to go to, especially at my age and at my point of musical development. First time I really _knew_ I had "fans" and people who dug my stuff but didn't know me. Meeting so many demoscene/tracking people was seriously inspiring. - mentalfloss from KFMF/KLF

  • MAD dope keyboarding skills. That little bit he played in the beginning blows my mind!

  • I was at Naid 96. :) Joined the music compo. Scream Tracker was the rage (awesome program)...but Impulse Tracker had emerged around that time and quickly became king. Some really fun times....great melodies, cool pc musicians. These days I'm using BUZZ and ModPlug Tracker whenever the mood strikes me for a new melody. :) Some of my most favorite musicians were Necros, Basehead, Purple Motion, Norfair, Awesome and a few others as well.

  • this is classic. love it :)

  • Tracking is still alive.

  • 96?? end days of trackers... it really started from 86 with noisetracker (Amiga)

  • beautiful find man, great stuff! <3 Necros

  • The number of nights I spent at uni with Scream Tracker! Fantastic times!

  • I miss the old days
