This is little Hadari. Born July 27th, he was injured when some rough-housing gorillas accidentally knocked him down out of Mom's (Timu's) arms. As a rule, it is best if gorilla mom's can do the care-giving but in cases of injury the vets and keepers must step in to help temporarily. Hadari is recuperating well and beginning to get his little legs back under him, as you can see by this video, and he is always within a few feet of the rest of his troop. The keepers are encouraging him to cling and climb as would his gorilla caregiver. Once back with his gorilla family they will provide for all of his needs except nursing which is usually done with the help of the caregiver gorilla. In the past with other baby gorillas, this has been Rosie, Hadari's maternal grandmother. She will bring the baby to fenced openings where he can nurse from the keeper's bottle. While the baby nurses, the caregiver gorilla gets rewarded with raisins. In the meantime, we Zoo visitors are treated with the opportunity to see this adorable baby Western Lowland Gorilla "close-up and personal"! Enjoy!
