first video http://youtu.be/ND0BrMgWIY8

After approaching the bus driver of bus # 2072 for the second time, after his bus made the ridiculously loud noise, he then turned off his bus as can be seen in the previous video. So, just to count, Bus #2072 arrives at the bus stop at 6:19pm 8/13/11 and then proceeds to make the loud noise for well over 8 seconds. To put it in perspective, the noise lasted long enough for me, while sitting on the couch, to hear it, continue to hear it, still hearing it realize I should record it, reach into my pocket, pull out my iPhone, swipe the "unlock" function, click on my apps, click on my voice memo recorder, and then initiate the recording of a voice memo. After doing ALL OF THAT, I still managed to record the last 2 seconds of the noise!! The more I think about it the more likely it was well over 10 seconds, since I am sure I listened to the noise for a good 3 or 4 seconds before realizing that if it is lasting this long I should attempt to record it.

Anyway, in the last video, the bus drive starts the bus, revs teh engine quire extensively, then proceeds to make the noise (and you can see him actually doing something with the steering wheel that is making the noise!) then after making the noise, abruptly turns off the engine and starts to read a news paper... Why would he do that?? IT is almost like he is INTENTIONALLY making the noise. If you notice as well, he starts teh engine as I approach the bus, and he actually closes teh doors right before I get there, but then opens them to talk to me. Then after I leave in yet another fruitless attempt to have him admit to hearing the noise, he then turns off the bus AGAIN! This is now the 3rd time he has turned off the bus while being stopped on our street. Now, to this last video, this video is of him starting the bus for the THIRD time since being parked in front of our house. Once again, he unnecessarily revs the engine, and if you watch him in the driver's seat, you can actually see him look in his side-view mirror, I suspect to see if I am there filming him again. He then sees I am not there, and you can see him turn the steering wheel again (or whatever he is doing) and he immediately makes the noise for the THIRD time! He makes the noise right after checking in his side-view mirror to see if I am there watching him! There is no doubt in my mind that it is purposeful now!

  • Hi "solepole". The "loud noise" you are hearing is a malfunction in the bus' air-line. Compressed air is used for breaking on just about all MBTA buses and trains. "Revving" the engine helps build up enough air (should be above 80psi) for the bus to operate safely. This operator likely had air-intake problems and tried corrective action 2 or 3 times. The steering wheel does not make the noise you heard - that was simply a coincidence in timing.

  • @mbta0293 HI mbta0293 if this noise is a bus malfunction then why was the driver adamant about "not hearing the noise" and instead became extremely defensive about it when I very politely asked him what the noise was? I have never before seen a bus driver start and stop his bus 3 times, (making the noise each time) and then eventually leave.

  • @solepole After turning on the bus the 2nd time, he made the loud noise, then abruptly turned off the bus and started reading his newspaper. How is that getting the "bus ready" if he is now sitting and reading the paper for 5 minutes? here is the video of my encounter with the bus driver after he made the noise for the 2nd time (after he first claimed to not hear the 10 second noise the first time he did it).

  • @solepole i posted the link to the first video at the top of the "details section"

  • Tweeted them for ya!

"@mbtaGM Can the Arborway maintenance crews check air-intake or parking break on bus 2072. Bus makes loud noise when PB is released. Thanks!"

  • Again, that noise is likely the result of a leak or break in the air-line. Revving the engine builds up air, but also overheats the engine. If he (the op) receives a "hot engine" tell tale he is supposed to shut down the vehicle. Just as your videos make me certain you know a lot about birds, I'd suggest you listen to me on this. If you believe 2072 has a severe air-intake problem I'd suggest you report the bus to the General Manager (@mbtaGM on twitter).

  • After re-watching the video the "something to the steering wheel" is actually the operator releasing the parking break for the bus. Releasing the parking break causes the bus to intake a heap of air at one time to reading the break line for the upcoming trip.
