Oh, Stewball was a race horse,
And I wish he were mine.
He never drank water.
He always drank wine.
His bridle was silver.
His mane, it was gold.
And the worth of his saddle
Has never been told.

Oh, the fair grounds were crowded,
And Stewball was there.
But the betting was heavy,
On the bay and the mare.
And way up yonder,
Ahead of them all
Came a prancing and a dancing,
my noble Stewball.

I bet on the grey mare,
I bet on the bay.
If I'd a-bet on old Stewball,
I'd be a free man today.
Oh, the hoot owl she hollers,
And the turtle dove moans,
I'm a poor boy in trouble.
A long way from home.

Oh, Stewball was a race horse,
And I wish he were mine.
He never drank water.
He always drank wine.

  • Good version of a great song, Ruckernucker you are correct, it was about the second Earl of Gadolfins horse, unbeatable when it raced in Ireland. The song is a lament by a farm labourer toiling for a wealthy land owner and dreaming of home.

  • Mostly I was stuck by the african american person who is the only logical "singer"

the story is a blues one about perhaps the only event /hope/ dream the singer ever had of achieving FREEDOM yes in caps.

  • @daregularperson I just recorded this song, and I had never made that connection before! Thanks for the enlightenment! Come check mine out if you like. My friend Eric plays a mean mandolin!

  • is the original finger picking or regular strumming cuz ive heard both

  • Sounds really good.

  • great job man!

  • Hey gkartsonakis, nice cover!

I was reading an article that related this song to "Happy Christmas" by John Lennon. Have a listen here on Youtube, you might be surprise!!!!
