Kool-Aid TV ad featuring Metroid II contest - Early 1992

Here's the story behind this little piece of footage.

After I was done capturing the fifth episode of GamePro TV I had recorded on my old VHS tape, I fast forwarded to the next episode just to see what it games it would feature. To my surprise, it was not GamePro TV, but an episode of Ren & Stimpy that showed up next (featuring "Black Hole" and "Stimpy's Invention" if you wanted to know, and you probably didn't). I also recorded the advertisements during the show, and in addition to a promotional spot for Clarissa Explains It All, there was also an ad for Kool-Aid.

Nothing special about the Kool-Aid ad, so I fast forwarded through that until I saw the small part at the end promoting a contest where kids could win a copy of Metroid II for Game Boy. And since the internet is obviously suffering from a lack of corny video game TV advertisements from the 80s and 90s, I felt this needed to be put on YouTube.

The Metroid II part is only during the last 20 seconds, and it's not terribly exciting. But the stuff leading up to it is pure gold. Marvel at the progress in product advertising for children since the early 90s. Boy, I sure miss those MC Hammer-style dance productions that plagued kids commercials during that era.

I remember this commercial, and almost getting diabetes when I drank 20 times my body weight in artificially-flavored drink mix just so I could get this game. The fuckers never sent it to me. I was a sad, sad kid. (And even sadder later on when I actually got the game, and it was a disappointment.)
