I disagree. The Dying Animal is not a standard issue May/ November romance, not the elegant creep show that is Lolita. Consuela is a woman, not a child, fully formed as an individual, and drawn to David because of his talents and experience. The novel finds its center center when she is stricken with cancer, when her body betrays her, and the aging professor comes to her bed to comfort her. Then and there they are equally imprisoned in the ever abraded carraiges we must all soon leve aside.

I entirely disagree. The Dying Animal is as much about the irreducble imprisonment of the mind inside the body [ the vehicle we all eventaully leave aside] as a standard issue May/October romance. This is not Lolita for fuck sakes. David connects with Consuela for more reasons than lust. She is not a fool, not to be under-estimated, and by no means a child. And when she is stricken with cancer, when her body betrays her, the novel finds its rather grim center. Which holds.

What struck me as laughable was the moment where David puts his hand on Consuela's wrist and strokes it while they are sitting at the piano. His gnarled, wrinkled hand on her smooth young skin was horrifying and the contrast of that one moment-- his decaying body furtively stroking her taut body -summed up the whole pathos of the film.

Well said. And pay no attention to the Stalinists, like godfreyel, who toss their 'sexist' shit out the window of their hybrid minivans. Roth is the living titan of American novelists and in the last 15 years has produced more first rate work than any of these indoctrinated trolls can name. They like their 'hard stuff' sweet and well diluted, and Roth does not deliver this at all.

Hmmm...you come across as a bit of a sexist asshole. Sorry to say, but true. Why can't a 50 year old woman be beautiful doing a striptease? What does that say about your ability to love or appreciate a "beautiful" woman?
It's rather embarassing, I think, for yourself and I'd advise, as a woman, that you reconsider your comment.

Hey, thanks for sharing... I just bought "The Dying Animal" tonight and I'm going to an advanced screening of Elegy tomorrow night. I have to disagree with you about P.Clarkson, maybe I'm a perv but I'd love to see her strip (I'm 36) and while we're at it, I wouldn't mind seeing Meryl Streep in her birthday suit either.
Kingsley is a brilliant actor, I'm expecting him to be great in the lead role...
Good luck with your memoir.
