In this 1958 classic from MGM, Clark Gable plays the commander of a WWII submarine that has recently been sunk in an area of the Pacific known as the Bunko Straits. Assigned to a desk job back at Pearl Harbor, he still mourns the loss of his crew and his boat. Burt Lancaster plays the Executive Officer of the submarine USS Nerka which is due a change of command. Lancaster relishes the position, but is passed over in favor of Gable, who sees this posting as a chance to return to the Bunko Straits and extract revenge on the Japanese destroyer which he feels certain sank his old command.
The personality clash between the two men is inevitable, but they put their personal differences behind them, and head off on a combat mission, which against orders, will include Gable's return visit to the forbidden Bunko Straits.
The excellent direction of Robert Wise enables the audience to feel at first hand, the underwater tensions and sweaty, claustrophobic conditions that submariners experienced during times of combat in World War II.

Yeah, they didn't have non-stop CGI graphics with explosions every five seconds. Back in those days, they actually tried to tell a story.
