See discontinuous quantum transitions from the fundamental state of the hydrogen atom (minimum energy E=-13.6 eV) to the closest excited stationary state (first stationary excited state E=-3.4 eV). The atom gets excited by energy absorption and radiates it by returning to the ground state.
This video shows the way old old quanum theory (Copenhaguen) totally ignores intermediate states in between two stationary states. There is a discontinuity that was always rejected by Planck, Einstein, Schrödinger, De Broglie and many others.
This discontinuity of Quantism is no longer necessary thanks to a new PostCopenhaguen theory based on non-linear dynamical systems.
Watch and compare with videos for continuous, determinstic transitions already available in YouTube

After comprehending the discontinuous gap of old Quantism you will appreciate why Quantism was so controversial and will have a glimpse of the Physics that will dominate the coming decades.

is this DFT or variational?
