Source from Wikipedia; 'Sherbet Powder': Sherbet in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries is a fizzy powder, containing sugar and flavouring, and an edible acidic and base. The acid may be tartaric, citric or malic acid, and the base may be sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, or a mixture of these and/or other similar carbonates[citation needed]. To this is added a large amount of sugar to mask the unappetising flavour of the reactive powders, and fruit or cream soda flavouring.

The acid-carbonate reaction occurs upon presence of moisture (juice/saliva). Sherbet used to be stirred into various beverages to make effervescing drinks, in a similar way to making lemonade from lemonade powders, before canned carbonated drinks became ubiquitous. Sherbet is now used to mean this powder sold as a sweet. (In the United States, it would be somewhat comparable to the powder in Pixy Stix or Fun Dip, though having the fizzy quality of effervescing candy, such as Pop Rocks.)


Enjoy this homemade fizzy powder by itself, or dust some on a sponge cake. It can be enjoyed on ice cream or where ever your imagination will take you.

Sherbet:
6 heaped Tbspns of icing sugar
3/4 teas of bicarbonate of soda
1/4 (level) tspn citric acid
1/4 (level) tspn tartaric acid

Optional: 1 tspn Tang (powdered orange drink) or flavoured jelly crystals.

  • can you add food colouring to make it diffrent colours aswell?

  • Maybe powered food dye. The liquid food dye may cause the akaline and acid to activate with each other!

  • Can also add any flavour jelly crystals to this!

Now listen up... in my country (Australia), Look up 'Sherbet Powder' in Wikipedia and you will find that Sherbet in the UK and Australia is a fizzy powder containing an edible acid and alkaline base. The US call it Pixy Stix or Fun Dip and found in Pop Rocks. So dude, you must be thinking of Sorbet!
