Horrid film, saw it in '85 when it was shown as part of the 40th anniversary of Hiroshima.

Nuclear war didn't stop you, then!

one of the most upsetting movies ever made.

I have not seen this movie but vaguely remember previews for "The Day After" when I was a kid...my parents would not let me watch it...finally did 30+ years later....

Born in 1973 (and growing up in 80s) I remember the fear. I remember even the escalation of 1982-1984 (deployment of both Pershing II and SS-20). The Czechoslovak TV fed us with similar nuke-war ridden programmes, there were even fantasy movies for children about the postnuclear world. I'm glad my daughters are not exposed to this kind of apocalyptic scare.

@simpsonfan13 Sadly, if a true to life film was created, nobody would believe it. It would be so horrifying that most viewers would consider it a fantasy.

@Loftusboi and as the film says at the end a real war would likely be much, much, worse. this needs to be remade. by a competent cast and crew.

If you leave your home, authorities may use it for homeless families. If you are not in your home, authorities will not help you seek shelter or daily essentials. Mmmmm bbc at their best.

@fincaman2 I'm surprised nobody's said, "So she was alright then?" yet. Congratulations anyway.
this film scarred me so bad. You can keep your gore and your jumpy crap, this is a real scary film.

All incredibly harrowing film clips should end with the word "Chunderbuttocks".
