Thanks to YouTube extending the time limit for videos to 15 minutes, I am able to re-release my classic documentary "The God Illusion: Root of all Ills? - Part 1: Unintelligent Design" commercial free - in a single showing instead of two parts.

Originally broadcast in June 2007 on JXTV (JazzX Television), this programme introduces us to Cambridge University's professor of natural sciences, Dr Richard Lawkins, as he gallivants around the world explaining why science offers so much more than religious superstition. He vividly explains how, even though a horse is more complicated than a space shuttle, natural selection and not a deity accounts for the complexity of the organism.

He then locks horns with the late Reverend Jerry Falwell (who died the day after filming, making this his last ever TV interview) - telling him to his face that his Liberty "University" (where dinosaur bones purported to be only 3000 years old are displayed) is "an educational disgrace!"

He pours scorn on the USA which, at the time, had 60% of citizens believing the world was invented after the first domesticated dog!

Thanks to Lawkins, that figure is now much lower - only 51% of Americans currently believe the world to be less than 10 000 years old, and the number of non-believers in any deity has doubled in the 3 years since the film was released (15% as opposed to 7%).

Bodily removed from Falwell's office at gunpoint, he finishes by explaining that any deity must be considered a scientific natural phenomenon, and studied accordingly - but that there is presently no evidence for one.

From the Gabon jungle to the Arizona desert to the Grand Canyon, and then to Falwell's bastion of educational ignorance, Lynchburg's Liberty University, "The God Illusion: Root of all Ills? - Part 1: Unintelligent Design" is an astonishing polemic against religious thought that leaves us in no doubt about the value of science, not just in the modern world, but through the ages as well.

Rated PG (BBFC) - for mild insults, graphic animal violence and religiously sensitive material

Running time: 13 minutes

  • Unintelligent design? Just stop there.. what a delusion...

  • @bogan182

It's because you "just stop there" that you have no clue about how millions of years of evolution can create the illusion of design.

For your first ever lesson, please actually watch the film.

  • what a load of unscientific crap,98% dream on we are a very long way from apes, although we come from animals we are very different. And the Book is not 2000 years old,it was written by men about 1700 years ago.

  • @trant711

    It's 98.5% actually.

A chimpanzee has very minor differences to yourself.

  • @jazzx251 pfft whatever helps you wank at night. Oh I have a clue indeed....

  • Lol the Sims.

  • you seem a very close minded person

  • @farvision

Well - exposure to nice atheists is a good start.

When people realise that we don't have horns and a tail and aren't secretly sacrificing babies in our spare time, they might get an inkling that an atheist is just a normal person with a different outlook on the questions of existence.

There's room for the softly, softly approach - and also, the no-nonsense Hitchens/Dawkins "you believe in a load of rubbish and here's why ..." approach.

Both can help someone escape religion.

  • @farvision Also, humans create laws and morals to live in societies, to co-exist. MOST of these laws generally make sense; not violating the property of others, etc. This is natural. Religion teaches unnatural laws, and teaches that they are ordained by God. People need to realize the difference, but it really takes an open mind and the willingness to learn.

  • @farvision People have to realize first that they have done nothing wrong, or at least are not inherently evil. Empower people with pride in human nature. The first thing religion convinces people of is that they are evil, bad and vulnerable in order to want salvation. Next is challenging one's beliefs at the most fundamental level, their ethnocentrism, their world view, and trying other perspectives. A basic anthropology class doesn't hurt.
