We rescued the two sweetest kittens in the world tonight (maybe a month or so in the world) who had nestled themselves in the cut, dried grass in the middle of a country highway. It was very dark and, seeing their shimmering eyes in my brights at the last moment, I missed them by a foot at most. We stopped and picked them up, and were treated to purring and nuzzling, until we decided we must be leaving. We then took some of the dried grass up to the porch of the farmhouse to which they must have belonged, and left them watching us as we left, but remaining safely on the porch.
We definitely would have, except that we were moving out of the country, so we would have only had them for a month.
