The didgeridoo, or yirdaki as it is known in north-east Arnhem Land, NT, is an iconic Australian musical instrument. The unique 'circular breathing' method, whereby the instrument is sounded continuously without a break by simultaneously breathing in through the nose and blowing through the mouth, has fascinated non-Aboriginal people ever since the instrument was first heard by European ears in the early 1800s.

Today, the didgeridoo's popularity has spread to all reaches of the globe from its original Northern Territory origins, with an especially strong following in Europe, the USA and Japan.

The instrument's popularity has been accompanied by its commercial exploitation, with didgeridoos these days being made from all sorts of materials including glass, leather, plastic and drilled timber. Authentic traditional Aboriginal didgeridoos, which are made in the remote parts of the coastal regions of the 'Top End' of the Northern Territory, are invariably crafted from termite-holloweed eucalyptus trees.

If you intend to purchase a didgeridoo, be sure of what you are buying as many souvenir shops and galleries in Australia and overseas sell Indonesian-made didgeridoos under the guise of authentic Aboriginal ones. This has become an issue of national, indeed, international disgrace! You can learn more about authenticity and other issues from the iDIDJ Forum:

  • i started off on a decorated pvc pipe made in china. now i'm playing a leather didge made in america, and have an agave didge made in america being custom made right now. i plan on getting an authentic yirdaki only when i develop a more traditional style of playing.
