This is a vintage 1958 blast from the past. My grandfather filmed a road trip from Fresno, CA to San Jose, CA via Hwy 99 to Los Banos and Hwy 152 to the Pacheco pass. Finally arriving in San Jose via old Hwy 101. Plenty of old cars, old gas stations and old stores that were torn down a generation ago. Sign for the old Salinas Cominos Hotel can be seem along the route. Shades of John Stenbeck in mid-twentith century central and northern California. A beautiful vintage spanish musical soundtrack helps take you back in time. Enjoy this rare glimpse into the past 50 years ago.

  • Hwy 152 over Pacheco Pass was known locally as "Blood Alley" back in these days. A very treacherous piece of road. Most of it was improved to a four lane divided highway in the 1960's, but some of it is still two lane undivided. I still avoid if I can. Pretty scenery though.

  • I think I recognize some portions of 152 as well....the old 101 which is now Monterey Highway....... and several of the SJ locations

  • @fakemustash: The "Old 99" is California State Route 99, formerly US 99. Much of the old route has been slightly bypassed through the Central Valley cities for the modern freeway.

  • This is absolutely fantastic...... what is the "old 99" that sideslide talks about? Was it routed on the current I-5????? There are some clues in these videos as to where your grandfather was on the highway (signs etc) --- it would be interesting to go back and see how the sites have changed..... in some rural places, not so much I think.....

  • thats Highway 99 no if its the year 1950 then this is the golden state highway which is the old 99.
