Jonas Psalter by Styx, presented with the original cover art.

When Captain Jonas Psalter
Sailed his ship to sea
Anne Bonny kept him company

The skull and crossbones flew
Above the ocean blue
The captain's men where a pirate's crew

The ships they sought to take
Were of the Spanish Main
A gift from Ferdinand of Spain

And though you rob and kill to find your dream
Your crimes are hardly what they seem

Tortuga held the treasure of a thousand kings
So Jonas planned to steal everything

Two hundred men stood guard
Around the fortune's nest
But Psalter's steel slew all the rest

And when the smoke had cleared
And bloody bodies lay
Everyone could hear the minstrel play

Woo woo Jonas Psalter
You've captured every prize
There is to dream of in one life

And so we wonder why
We found you in your bed
With that bullet in your head

  • WOW- Thanks for posting the lyrics to this rare Styx track. I was right in thinking it was about pirates when I first listened to the "Serpent" disc.

  • RRRRRRR.... me favorite piriate song.

  • I was born in '73 when this album was released, and I've heard other music from that time period and it seems to me that Styx was a little ahead of it's time. It seems to me that this music was pretty hard edged for it's time.

  • This "Numer Two" singer for Styx is great...he has an exclamative pitch that is truly underrated, for its effect is perfect for progressive/symphonic rock compositions...

I am happy to live in the present, but 'Jonas Psalter' somehow makes me wish that it could be 1970-1973 again.

  • I remember buying the album cause of the cover, and it seemed to try to tell a story with a series of stories. It was pretty commonplace and not original in story, but they do finish songs well

  • I think this is one of the best songs from the Wooden Nickel recordings

  • J.Y and J.C Great dualing guitarist. Note J.C had one of the highest voices i have ever heard.

  • Heh, I love that the Jonas Brothers show up as related videos. I know that the kids love 'em but, uh, no.

  • The Wood Nickel era of STYX was awesome. Thanks for posting these. Top notch midwestern, corn fed, balls to the walls Rock n Roll!!!

  • sweet video great quality 5 out of 5
