This group of North American river otters and I surprised each other on the Mad River near Tyee City today. The river is still high and muddy from recent rains. The otters couldn't seem to decide whether to be curious or frightened. I think there were six of them, and I think they were young ones. My camera was acting up so I didn't get the huffing and chompy noises they were making.

Right before Christmas here in Wyoming I watched two otters swim at least 100 yds upriver in strong current under the ice! It was my first time seeing them in person.
