arlenep930: Read up some on your photography...... largethomas was right, you just take a light reading and lock your exposure. He is a photojournalist so his pictures are barely touched in post processing!

Having that above lighting helps in situations like that. Check on flickr for lighting tips.

your comment was posted a year ago but do you still feel that nikon is behind in iso? some rating I looked at recently showed nikon on top for there sensor.

with the 30d you can use some individual image functions... so i think he just used a higher contrast or it was edited afterwards..

You can just measure and lock exposure on a very bright light (there's one in the background there) and it'll set a very fast shutterspeed. That means it'll let very little light in, and only very bright highlights will be visible. So as around the boxer the environment is rather badly lighted (in comparison) it'll turn out the lights on his body, but render the surrounding dark. Possibly it's slightly edited afterwards. But I don't think there's been much fiddling with it off-camera.
