One of my favourite versions! Sounds like if she would be singing the Schubert Lied. I know she knows the Erns poem by heart, that's why it doesn't sound like just a technical performance, she makes us almost forget how f..ing difficult it is. This is Art above technic!

It came across to me as a stiff or 'wooden' performance (sorry to say: I usually love Hilary).

actually This "Grand Caprice" is one of the most difficult violin pieces because the player must play 4 "voices" with a monophonic insturment. Pretty Impressive

When you refer to "voices" on an instrument, they are the different pitches you can play at once. For instance, a trumpet, clarinet, flute, etc. can only produce a 1 voiced sound. The violin can sound as if 4 voices are playing. In this song, there are 4 melody/harmony lines playing at the same time. So the Hahn is expressing 4 voices at once.

thanks for your prompt reply and explainatiion. :)
However i believe the strings are arrarnged in an arc so really on two strings ie a double stop can be played, and other chordal attempt is really swept 123 or 1234 but not a sustainable or simultaneous 4 note play.
this alternating between a double and a low not could be said to constitute two lines and three voices but i cant see 4 being possible
