Author Raj Patel examines how supermarkets are designed to encourage shoppers to buy more food, and argues that purchasing "safe" products (organic, fair/free trade, etc.) does little to help the global economy or the environment.

-----

Raj Patel discusses Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System.

Half the world is malnourished, the other half obese—both symptoms of the corporate food monopoly. To show how a few powerful distributors control the health of the entire world, Raj Patel conducts a global investigation. What he uncovers is shocking—the real reasons for famine in Asia and Africa, an epidemic of farmer suicides, and the false choices and conveniences in supermarkets. Yet he also finds hope—in international resistance movements working to create a more democratic, sustainable, and joyful food system. From seed to store to plate, Stuffed and Starved explains the steps to regain control of the global food economy, stop the exploitation of farmers and consumers, and rebalance global sustenance - Cody's Books

Raj Patel received his PhD in Sociology from Cornell University and has worked at the World Bank, World Trade Organization, and the United Nations. He is a writer and activist concerned with land reform politics, development studies, and food sovereignty. He authored Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System.

  • Excellent, succinct commentary! "the American delusion... we'll change the world through shopping"

  • I have been grocery shopping for over 20 years. When you go, do not go hungry. Take a list of what you need and stick to it. Your foolish if you spend money on junk. Stick to your list. I keep a list on the fridge and we add to it as we run out. If possible it is always best to buy from your local farmers, some smaller stores do contract with local farmers. I actually grow alot of my own vegis and fruits. But it is getting more and more difficult with the heat. "Hurry up and buy"

  • @svagrod Is it a troll thing to correct people on terrible spelling & grammar? If you can't find an extra 18 seconds to write correctly, why bother? If you want the world to understand and consider your opinions, you might try making such a commitment to your readers. If you have a microwave oven, then you are saving time each day. There's your 18 seconds, man.

  • @HunterMann ...Wow....You are just one of the many, many lonely trolls on youtube, get a life Loser...
