Yo-Yo Ma: Elgar Cello Concerto, 1st mvmt

Yo-Yo Ma with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago SO in this performance from 1997. This concerto will forever be associated with Jaqueline duPre, but YYM gives a performance that is beyond breathtaking. It is fitting that Barenboim is the conductor; I'm sure he feels this concerto is still in very good hands.

Jacqueline Du Pre. No doubt about it! Yo Yo Ma is an excellent cellist but Du Pre is the one who owns this concerto.... and had she been able to play for more years, she would undoubtedly be the best cellist to ever exist- past and present.

I'm gonna have to disagree. Yo yo ma puts so much more emotion in it. Body language and dynamics. The better overall cellist is probably Jacqueline but in this concerto yo yo ma has it.

I've heard and seen Yo Yo Ma and Jaqueline duPre playing, Elgar, Dvoak, Vivaldi, Bach...and many more so many times, I cannot count since the days at Northwestern, a poor Graduate student at Ravinia Park. Real soul mate.
