The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, Nigeria's main opposition group, has started their first day of a unilateral ceasfire they say could break if the military targets its camp bases.

Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from Lagos where she holds an exclusive interview with one of their spokesmen.

  • Well done Al Jazeera for this report. This is why I love you so much, you report that which the mass media of the West don't care about as it's politically not convenient.

    Keep up the excellent raportages!

  • This 'war' is the result of decades of senseless kleptomaniac criminal acts led by the Northern establishment, several of whom are not even Nigerians by origin. Little wonder why they would allow billions of revenue from oil proceeds to go unaccounted for. A classic case of demonic possession.

  • thumbs up if you typed in "niger fighters"

  • i love this station AL jerzerra, this station deserve an award.

  • "A man who chooses to fight monsters must see to it that in the process he does not become a monster, because one you look into the abyss, the abyss also looks right back into you"- Nietzsche ...... We have heard this crap before: RUF, FARC, etc .... who are we kidding ?? they are no freedom fighters ... In choosing to fight monsters MEND has become the most ruthless and senseless of all the monsters .. They are no better than the satanic government.

  • Similarly with Rwanda, Fiji, Australia and America (if we'd left any more natives alive) South Africa ... and so on.

Then again you can always sub divide people if that's your mentality. People need to recognise we are ALL family, however distant. If there was a lower disparity of oppportunity I think this would be a real possibility. Unfortunately the lucky few, be they American, european or Nigerian spoil it for everyone =(

  • Nigeria is a complex problem and what MEND are doing is defending their tribal territory from foreigners(Nigerian Govt/oil companies). The foreign oil companies and governments have used Nigeria for 20 years to prop up their oil requirements with support of Military regimes and non representative Elected government. Democracy does not work in multitribal societies it empowers the large majority tribes over the smaller tribes. The sad thing is MENDs actions may lead to a series of Civil wars.

  • Nigeria is a peaceful nation and the citizens are hospitable. However Nigeria itself is a falisy. It really is a country ideology forced upon 450 tribes with different identities. This falisy is the legacy of colonisation and democracy which has empowered the majority tribes Yoruba, Hausa to the detriment of the smaller tribes such as the Ijaws in the Niger Delta. The government is not representing the minority tribes and dont care because to them they are as foreign as an Englishman in Nigeria

  • I find that very easy to believe. History will not look kindly on the staggering hypocrisy of Blair, Bush and the rest of this disgusting aristocracy.

I just hope with what little I might do the future will be brighter for ALL mankind, not just the scum responsible for this mess.

  • They'll regroup and keep fighting. The poor are fed up and Neocolonial Nigeria will crumble

  • Support the efforts of MEND!

  • it may look bad what they militants are dong, but they are doing the right thing because the corrupted motherfucker are just stocking their money instead of sharing it with their country
