These things can over 4 foot long and live for 30 years - the one here is a baby. They are native in Vanuatu/Solomon Islands. Get this - they taste awful (hence they are usually covered in chilli sauce) and there is suprisingly little meat on them - and its bloody hard work to get what tiny meat is there out. Why bother killing this animal that is endangered, just to feed tourist curiosity?
Please dont eat any while visiting the Pacific Islands. thanks

@andrewCNC905 When I lived in the Marshalls they were not endangered. They were plentiful and a staple in the natives diet. When were coconut crabs added to the endangered species list ? If in fact they are endangered.... of course I would leave them alone. I have great respect for Mother Nature.

@kaikai64 I usually don't reply to a 2 year old comment but...are you nuts ? I lived in the Marshall Islands for a few years and we caught coconut crab all the time. It's the most delicious meat I've ever tasted.Delicate, coconut flavored, plenty of meat, and even comes with it's own coconut oil pouch for dipping. It's even delicious raw. I've NEVER seen it with chili sauce...ever.I just don't understand how anyone could think they taste awful.
They live in French Polynesia

Catching these things is tricky because a small one will take a finger off without any effort, and a large one will do the same to your hand....ouch...need a hand with that?
