A beutiful, self-expressive song with which Lena Horne totally identifies. Just listen to the intensity, the authentic intensity, as she sings the second round of I Had a Dream Last Night, so personal and self-engrossing. Lena sings with natural intensity when she accepts the subject and context of a song. Here, you hear the orphaned girl in south Georgia, the slighted girl from Brooklyn, and the the thwarted Hollywood starlet. Still, she dreams and recounts her experience, our experience.

Your point is well taken! Any course I took in English literature did not hold me to account for not having spoken to Spencer or Shakespeare. So, yes, I did "...strive to understand or gain insight to the given moment." Please continue!

Does anyone know if this performance is on any of the Flip Wilson Show DVDs that are out?
Beautiful performance. You guys below are taking this a little too seriiously.

Any spectator to a great performer sometimes imposes the lense of the performer's past and experiences on the given performance. When this occurs, we strive to understand or gain insight to the given moment. No, many of us have not actually spoken to the performer. We simply attempt to figure the performers intent in the moment. Certainly, you should understand that.

Anyone know on what show this was performed? I'm almost certain this is not from her "The Lady and Her Music" Broadway show, as clip narrator Billy Dee Williams implies. By the way, Joss Stone is the only other singer I know of to record this awesome song, releasing it on her 2003 "Soul Sessions" CD; however, Lena's version is tops--bar none...
