@gilgamess I neglected to mention that H&J had a long association with the Carters. They started working together with Chet Atkins at KWTO in Springfield, MO in the late 1940s. It was while at KWTO that RCA signed both Atkins and H&J to recording contracts (the Carters were already with RCA, and Ezra Carter was managing Atkins). By 1950, the Grand Ole Opry had signed the Carters with Chet Atkins, and H&J made the move to Nashville.

@moproducer Thanks for the information and I am not the least bit surprised about their talent.

@gilgamess June first recorded with Homer & Jethro in 1949; they had a minor hit with a comedy take on "Baby, It's Cold Outside". Prior to that, H&J were session players. Even after stardom, they both remained first-call Nashville pickers. Jethro (Kenneth Burns) was Chet Atkins' brother-in-law.

@RedDirtRules Yep, and another: "Behind the barn on a cold dark night, I had a stick of dynamite. I stuck it in the north end of a south-bound cow, Now I know why they call it a cow-pile. Tennessee, Tennessee..."

It's the rare musician that can mix comedy and good musicianship. This is one example, Spike Jones and his City Slickers and Roy Clark are others. When I was a boy, I saw more comedy out of Clark, and then I saw him perform on "The Odd Couple" show on both guitar and violin and then I recognized how versatile he was. Unless your shtick is "I can't play", the jokes work so much better when you are as talented as these three were.
