By sparing Udet it ironically proved to help the allies in the second World War as he was terrible inside the 3rd Reich... and later ended up shooting himself.

What a lot of people don't really realize is that WWI dogfights are far more brutal and bloody than one can imagine. Since there's no such thing as armor back then, bullets that hit the plane will often hit and kill the pilot as well. Also, planes back then were made of wood and canvas, they are literally flying fire hazards, and downed pilots tended to be immolated alive before they even hit the ground.
Nowadays, we at least have ejection seats, armor plating, and computerized fire safety.

I'm in the cockpit? Apparently this is a sophisticated Virtual reality WW1 fighter plane simulation, cleverly disguised as a cheap history channel show.
An era of warfare where man & machine are one

honour in aerial combat was not a rare sight in the first world war.... in the second world war you had incidents of bailed out pilots being shot by enemy fighters.... things turn uglier and uglier as we civilise....
