June 24, 2009. I heard chirps from a group of 5 eggs and wonder what's going on. I even went through the thick shavings to see if a chick was buried by its parents and I found nothing. Finally I picked one egg up and found those little beak marks that formed a circle around the egg shell. It was in my warm palm for about 20 minutes but its pecking was off and on. Little did I expect, once I put it down on paper towel so I could attend to other birds for a minute, it broke through much more than earlier. I grabbed the camera and figured out how to film for the first time. I have used the camera many times but only for taking pictures. Fortunately I was able to record this wonderful event. I returned the baby to the nestbox. The mother looked very sweet and acceptive. I will check again to make sure they are okay.

Please check out it's playing on playpen on August 17, 2009

  • wow the baby is so cool my cockatiel just lay about 4 eggs and it been like 2 or 3 weeks and i cant wait for the egg to hatch and thnkz for filming it ^-^

  • This baby is almost fully fledged now and I will videotape him soon. Good luck on your eggs hatching! Please show us what yours are like. :-)

  • gosh this is recent. How is the little fella now? I have a cockatiel but he's a big boy now... it's funny to think that they all start like this. Very cute 5/5 thanks for sharing

  • Thank you so much for your kind words and rating. The little fellow is doing well. I started hand-feeding him on Saturday, July 11. It's very interesting how he didn't exhibit any fear or struggle like all other babies who were first pulled out a nestbox. He was trusting and comfortable as if he had always been hand-fed. I wondered if it had anything to do with hearing my voice upon hatching. :-) Just now he watched this film for the first time July 14 and was captivated by it the entire time!

  • Thank you Crem2057 for your kind comment. I have been checking every day and the baby is doing fine. None of the other 4 eggs hatched, so he is the only one with his parents' undivided attention. I will probably start hand-feeding him when he is 3 weeks old so he will be very tame. This is the first time I video taped anything. Thank you very much for your kind comment. I am very grateful. :-)

  • @SuperBilly124 because if you help a baby hatch through its egg with your hands it won't be strong when it grows up
