What year is this? This is best version I've heard. The piano is a bit too forward and not quite on Toscha's level. Not saying Kaufmann is bad. If only this was the prevalent level of playing today.

This is my favorite recording of Brahms 2nd sonata.
On the same CD there is Brahms 1st sonata,which is also amazing.I wish every violinist would listen to this recording and learn something.!

Amazing how he transforms that piece into a kind of fantasy. Seidel actually possessed a probing musicality that I hadn't associated with him before.

yes, he was completely unique as a violinist. he used such expressive freedom that is seldom seen and/or appreciated.
Ivry Gitlis is another violinist who uses a lot of expressive freedom, though differently than Seidel of course :)
