Asian-American students applying to elite colleges have a new strategy: Don't check Asian. They believe that the college admission process disadvantages Asians overachievers. Some even say colleges set a ceiling on the percentage of Asians in the student population. Is this discrimination?

A study on data from 1997 conducted by Princeton sociologist Thomas Espenshade calculates that an Asian student has to score 140 points higher on the SATs in order to have the same chance of admission as a white student.

No wonder more and more Asians, especially mixed-raced Asians, are choosing not to identify as Asian on their college applications. But the question remains...why is it still OK to discriminate against Asians in college admissions?

  • @Keirnoth lol but you are still a squinty eyed asian

  • @linateacup but they aren't half white and they're not half black you bitch. do you miss the point? if they point down that they're half black, they'll get into the school free of charge and be get all As.

  • @linateacup Not every or even most Asian students are rude or weird. But being shy doesnt cut it. Its the real world, you need to speak. When somebody needs you for an assignment or communication because thats your partner or collegue its time to speak up. I'm talking about a very small minority here i dont see why you're up in arms.

  • @linateacup Its not a judgement so much as Asians are generally the faults of it. i can name plenty of other things that other races fault in drastically. But thought and self mind is more valued in society than smart people who do the same things. I wasnt using my Asian friends as a legit excuse so much as showing how many are aware of this.

  • @linateacup Now take the 'other' student. He doesnt score as high, but has a social conscious or politics or economics and not just standards like many (usually asian) students do but actually voices and strives to get it. Has done websites and community organization. Most enrollers are taking THAT kid, not the one with the high grades. Anyone can write they're smart on paper, but can they show it?

  • @linateacup Well no thats not what i was talking about. Its not a generalization so much as its true. I was talking about Asians who were rejected in general. Take it from a college enroller's standpoint. You have many asian kids, all scoring high. But not much difference or self thinking between them other than them scoring really high.
