This is the first segment from Dr. David Neiman's lecture on The Garden of Eden. Dr. Neiman shows the connection between Ugaritic mythologies and the description of Eden as found in the first chapters of Genesis.

  • Re: God sits over the fountain

The temple in Jerusalem was modeled on the Garden in Eden right down to it being located over Gihon spring. The late Ernest L. Martin showed how this fact (& many others) proves that the modern location of the so-called Haram-al-Sharif ("Noble Enclosure" aka Temple Mount) is just north of the true location of the temple(s) -- the so-called wailing wall being left over from the adjacent Roman Fort Antonia. See Dr. Martin's book, The Temples That Jerusalem Forgot.

  • 3) it seems that he is conflating Phonecian and Ugaritic culture, though his generalist lecture may be making it unclear. If I recall from another lecture of his, he does call Ugarit Phonecian. Well in case it wasn't clear, their culture took place at different times and is more of a father culture, and not the same uninterrupted culture. Same general area, but essentially different spots, though they shared a coastal presence.

Anyway, I do love his lectures.

  • 2) Trojan war is plausible, but not necessary, from the naming of town across the Mediterranean. A multi-ethnic migration is a likely possibility as well, some of whom may be Greek, and/or Etruscans; And, it is not necessarily certain that this occurred during the Trojan war.

  • Pretty good. Three problems though.

    1) While the Ugaritic texts are dated to around 1400 BCE, the oldest biblical texts are at latest from 1000 BCE, and by most modern academics placed around the 8th cen. BCE, dating the roots of the Patriarch narrative to around 1st mil. BCE. The Ugaritic language was probably formed around 1600, with the myths developing over that time, under the syncretic influence of Mesopotamia.
