There's no way the Taliban would had wanted to kill him, he would have been used for propaganda reasons. He was killed because if he wasn't, the Taliban would have lost men, and they can't afford to risk that.

i wonder how the taliban captures all these soldiers, wouldnt the soldiers fight back, forcing them to kill him or atleast make gun noises? even if they like ganged up on these soldiers while they are unarmed in an alley, arent they well trained in self defense?
