Madrid's underground became alive with cheers, chants and yells as young people from various countries made their way to different venues to attend special World Youth Day activities. This video report by Therence Charles (Malaysia) showcases the colour, energy and passion of Catholic youth who have gathered in Madrid for the World Youth Day 2011 celebrations.

They like thousands of other young people have descended onto Madrid, the host city for the 'World Youth Day' - the largest youth gathering in the world.

Teenagers and their adult chaperons are in Spain hoping to come away with a spiritual experience.

Moving out, they make their way towards Cibeles Square, wherer hundreds of thousands of young pilgrims have been waiting anxiously.

This catholic gathering takes place once in 3 years and it brings together people of all talents.

Rabab Zaitoun is one such example.

A prominent Palestinian artiste seen here singing the World Youth Day theme song, "Firm in Faith."

A sea of flags - despite the diversity of races, ethnic groups and cultural practices - they are One.

Their journey here has been long.

Getting here is a story in itself, filled with challenges and anticipation.

It is still unclear what really drew them here and what will they take away from the 6 days in Madrid.

But one thing is certain, the friendship that has been established over the past few days will stay with them for a long time.

Religious tourism it is not.

The organisers are hoping - these young pilgrims will not forget the experience.

And will draw closer to God, nature and the environment.
