UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham has called on UK young people to take part in UNICEF's Junior 8 (J8) competition, a young person's version of the G8. Beckham called on 13-17 year olds to enter the competition to win the chance to represent their country at the J8 Summit in Japan in July.
The J8 will provide young people with a platform to speak out about the global issues that are important to them and to voice their concerns to some of the most powerful leaders in the world. The winning team will get the chance to present a communiqué of global proposals to the G8, jointly written with other young people from the G8 nations.
On hearing about UNICEF's innovative J8 competition, Beckham lent his support through a video message.
To win a place at the J8 Summit in Japan 2-9 July, teams of four young people need to enter a competition which involves producing videos, multimedia presentations or written work based on the J8 topics which include; poverty and development; the impact of infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, on child survival; and climate change and global warming. Entries will be short-listed by UNICEF and the successful teams will be invited to present and discuss their entries with a judging panel of experts in London in April. The winning team of four will then be invited to the J8 Summit, joining teams of young people from other G8 nations as well as young representatives from the developing world.
Entry forms for the competition can be downloaded from http://www.unicef.org.uk/youthvoice/j8 or http://www.j8summit.com. The deadline for applications in the UK is 31 March 2008.
