During the Cold War, a Korean Air Lines red eye flight en-route to Seoul from New York via Anchorage strays over restricted Soviet airspace and is subsequently shot down, sparking an international controversy. An investigation reveals that the flight crew's failure to switch the autopilot from heading to INS mode following takeoff caused the flight to deviate from its assigned flight path and violate Soviet airspace.

  • Soviets = Justified killings. Classic moral bankruptcy and denial of basic human rights = why this regime fell. They will go to hell

  • I'm from USSR. (Forgive my bad English)

Here there is no fault of the pilot. For not performance of the order - he could be executed. The convergence of circumstances has occurred. In this space there was also an American scout plane RC-135. The Soviet command those years very much was nervous and without understanding, what and which is the plane, have given the order.

  • @catnipcraze1

A US warship shot down an Iranian Airline because it flew into a war zone. The US tried making radio contact but Military and Civilian aricrafts use different radio frequencies. The only thing that set US differetn than Soviet Union is that we held our share of the mistake, internationally apologized and compensated the Iranian people for their loses. Soviet Union just kept it a secret and did not apologize or compensate the families.

  • i can't believe what i read here.

I ask all of you commentators to take a min and think about this:

SHOULD THE GOD DAMN BLOODY WAR EVER BE AN EXCUSE FOR KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE? !

THE PILOT COULD'VE HAVE MADE RADIO CONTACT ! THINK ABOUT THIS, HOW HARD IT IS TO CALL THE CIVILIAN AIRLINE AND CONFIRM???

I SAY THIS IS NO ACCIDENT, I SAY THERE ARE A SHITLOAD OF PEOPLE THAT'S RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS, INCLUDING THE GOD DAMN COMMIE UNION AND UNITED STATES THAT INSTIGATED THE GOD DAMN COLD WAR !

  • ASSCHIN!!!!!!

  • @SansaFreak Yup

  • also doesn't the actor for the captian at 3:48 look the same as the actor they used for the episode on japan airlines 123

  • @SansaFreak Exactly.

  • @Solidboat123 being at night, many of the shades were prob pulled down

  • @badgerattoadhall Yeah, I saw an interview someone had with him. I feel sorry for him really, but he should have tried harder. If he'd pulled up alongside he might have seen lights and people in the cabin, and failing that he should have flown in front of the cockpit to make sure the crew had seen him (he said himself that he wasn't sure if his warning shots would be seen since they weren't tracers)
