This is the sort of instrument that will reignite your passion for north-east Arnhem Land yirdaki, and Djalu's sticks in particular. A career yirdaki craftsmen, Djalu's output of instruments is nothing short of amazing considering his age... Visitors making their pilgrimage to his home community would attest to his unbridled enthusiasm and energy, and the very fine musical instruments he produces from living trees... That tap tap tap underneath the bark, a few quick swings of the axe to bring down a termite-hollowed eucalypt, a couple more chops to remove a suitable segment of the log, and then the painstaking work of shaping the piece of timber to its best potential.

I hand-selected this instrument myself out of the many many instruments that I see Djalu make, and I do this year in and year out and also help expand Djalu's business and especially his Masterclasses and eco-tourism ventures. I love those sticks that have energy and vibrancy, and of course that unmistakable thunderous growl that Djalu is famous for.

If you don't know Djalu, you should, read his profile on the following link:

This yirdaki on offer plays in the key of D fundamental with E overtone. Whereas most lower key yirdaki are not very exciting to play, this yirdaki stood out for its richly textured and nuanced voice, its cushiony yet high backpressure, that heavenly soft-edged overtone note, and the rapidity with which the tongue is able to create accented notes. There's heaps of elasticity in the air column too, a clear standout yirdaki from the Master. Listen to Djalu's nephew Adam Marrilaga push this stick to its limits!

We're offering this yirdaki in the iDIDJ Store, check it out online:

If you're not a Gold, Silver or Bronze class member, make sure to mention "Xmas special" and we'll provide you with a discount on any didgeridoo offering in the iDIDJ Store. Merry Christmas everyone!
