Volvo XC60 Concept Car

Ever since the early 80's, after Peter Horbury took the reigns at Volvo Design in Sweden, the Volvo design language has transformed from rigid hard lines to more softer shapes. Nevertheless, the general design still remained rather rigid.

Horbury had introduced Alias 3D software into the Volvo Design process to speed up things, and that worked, but to get things faster is one thing, to properly design, model, evaluate and still stick to the original sketch design intend is something different.

It has always seemed that Volvo's most recent design was more influenced by the capabilities or incapabilities of their 3D digital modeling talent, with the surfaces not subtle enough, the radii too large, the transitions too strickt. Of course it was a nice change from the hard edge Volvo line, but it just was not emotional enough.

The XC60 Concept is the first full project created under the direction of Volvo's new Vice President of Design Steve Mattin, and Steve's expertise in design surface development from Mercedes-Benz is shining through in this model.
