Acoustic jazz guitar player ECM recording artist Ralph Towner plays a live solo. Before playing this tune, Ralph attaches a matchbox to the strings for a nice percussive effect (The name of the tune is "Veldt").
@Terry1969ism Take it as a joke. Maybe Ralph wanted to sound like a berimbau or something. The instrument isn't ruined, he can pull out the matchbox anytime :)
I like it :) (and allways wondered how he does it - while listening his albums)
Interessante o efeito exótico conseguido com este artifício. Parece um instrumento de bamvu ou outro material, dando-lhe um som semelhante a alguns instrumentos do oriente. Isto mostra o quanto é rico o violão
He strings a strip of paper ( paper match folder) in and out the strings, just behind his hand. Martin Taylor explains it on his Down At Cocomo's video.
Not my cup of tea really. Much rather watch Tommy Emmanuel.
Man, this is cool! :)

Why ruin a beautiful instrument by doing this? Utter insanity, he doesn't deserve a guitar if that's the best he can do with it.

Ingenious - The thing to note is that Ralph is the master of harmonics as well.
