A video capture of iTunes visualizer activity while playing my song 'Dejah Thoris'.

Years ago, I finished reading Robert A. Heinlein's book "Number of the Beast" which is his sort-of-sequel to his Lazarus Long books. In it Heinlein has a heroine who is named after another SciFi heroine 'Dejah Thoris' from Edgar Rice Buroughs' Barsoom novels. Which is to say, it was one of my first encounters with Sci-Fi inter-textual referentiality.

At about the same time, I had this melody kicking around which just wouldn't find any words. It was getting to be a right pain in the neck. So I had this song without words and an idea about wanting to write about the eternal Queen of Mars Dejah Thoris as well as the amply bosomed heroine of "Number of the (ahem) *Breast*'. In to this creative quandary stepped pharmakeus who wrote the words and declared the only rhyme for Barsoom is Mushroom, and thus the chorus became what you hear of it.
So it goes.
