I think Bruce is telling the truth: The American reality is starkly different from the American ideal. But I disagree that it's mainly about finances; I reckon it's mainly about the spirit of community. When the writers of the U.S. Constitution gave us a Republic, they challenged us to keep it. Can we keep it?

The 'war debt" percentage is minuscule when the entire budget is taken into account, therefore your supposition is preposterous.
