@meyouandthepiggies Two key differences are 8 megapixel still versus 2 megapixels and the included flash on the HF S30. The R21 is more of a budget model whereas the HF S30 is viewed as much more professional in capabilities.

@thereturningcow, both are quite nice although I don't own the Sony and haven't had one to conduct a physical comparison. Each does well based on their specifications although the Canon has more internal memory and the Sony has a bit more ability from an optical zoom perspective. I don't know if the Sony is Mac-compatible and that would be my only concern as a Mac user.

Question/// I was wondering what this camera's output (file extension) is? ex: is it mpg, avi, mpeg ect..? Also i was wondering how long your battery lasts on your highest quality setting. And just one more question, if you only use on board memory, do they supply you with a cable for file transport to computer?

@parkwaydrive59x The Vixia HF R21 records in AVCHD with an .MTS extension--most video editing programs readily use this format and it's also immediately uploadable to video sites. The battery is good for 45 to 50 minutes of recording time per charge and provides a little over 2 hours of playback before needing to be recharged.

Thank you so much!!! I just bought one after returning a Sony, which was a poor specimen with even worse software. I don't know why Canon doesn't offer a tour of the camera like this - it's way better than reading the manual, though of course that is important.
