The Virginia Tech shooting today is a case study follow-up to crisis communication programs I recently delivered for USC and IABC. Through my work as a crisis communication and media training expert, I have often used the 2007 Virginia Tech Shooting as a case study to teach the pitfalls of using social media to break crisis-related news. As we see this shooting unfold, I notice that there is already false information being shared through social media, and it is reported that text message notifications to students were delayed. More observations are shared in my video.
