Tom Smothers and Dick Smothers were interviewed for nearly three hours in Las Vegas, NV. They each individually chronicled their early years and influences (first Tom, then Dick) and were then interviewed together regarding their work as the Smothers Brothers. They spoke about their first network series, the short-lived situation comedy The Smothers Brothers Show. They spoke in detail about The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and the controversy surrounding the series topical material, that led to its cancellation by CBS in 1969. The two described the series comedy sketches, guest stars who appeared, and the tempestuous era in which it ran. They also talked about their resurgence as performers and the legacy of their comedy act. The interview was conducted by Karen Herman on October 14, 2000.

  • I'm 44. I've known of the Smothers Brothers all of my life but never paid them much attention until I saw them in a small piece recently. I'm enjoying discovering them and in depth. This piece was awesome! Both are very captivating, gifted and beautiful people. I can't wait to find every piece I can with them. Thank you for making this piece available.

  • Wow, what an awesome interview. Regarding "standing up," as Tommy mentions at the end, he really did stand up and I think it was inspiring. He mentions that he would "run right to the press" about CBS's crap, and I like that. He was kind of a whistle-blower, which I often want to be in my own work, but feel so apologetic about my mere presence there (because it's structured that way, imho), that I wouldn't say poop if I had a mouthful. Smothers Brothers > Santa Claus!

  • I was born in 1963 but even I knew these guys were cool back then.

  • I adore them!!! Their show was amazing i love tommy especially when he raised his voice to dick.

  • I love the SBs. He looks great for age and is funny as hell. It is such a damn shame that it seems a sound check failed as I can barely hear the interviewer. That is quite annoying. Ahh well.

  • From the description box (and stated at the beginning of the video):

"The interview was conducted by Karen Herman on October 14, 2000."

  • I've always been a Smothers Brothers fan. I loved them since I heard one of their early albums when I was a kid. But when was this filmed? Tommy is now in his seventies, but he looks too young here.
