Title :
Dan Dennett on dangerous memes

Found at : http://www.TED.com
http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_dennett_on_dangerous_memes.html

Description :
Philosopher and scientist Dan Dennett argues that human consciousness and free will are the result of physical processes and are not what we traditionally think they are. His 2003 book Freedom Evolves explores the way our brains have evolved to give us -- and only us -- the kind of freedom that matters, while 2006's Breaking the Spell examines religious belief through the lens of biology.

  • @cloudincloudout Absolutely. One has to begin with critiquing of self. If we do not do that , we are fools and will never learn anything

  • @daizee106 if by "lets agree to disagree" you mean you don't wish to continue this conversation..then I guess what I'll have to say next is pointless.. but I'll say it anyway, since you don't actually HAVE to read it..

To answer your question "who is to say who are our best minds?" I guess best minds tend to try to become scientists.. that's what happens.. it just is the way of the world.

and by the way critical thinking also means you ought to be critical of your self.

    isn't that science?

  • @cloudincloudout perhaps you are correct, however I will continue to question science along with everything else. This is what is called critical thinking. And I have a hard time with preservation of favored races, as it was funded by elitist royals, and placed them at the top of the food chain. Maybe a set up.And who is to say who are our best minds. Anyway, I agree to disagree and everyone has their own opinion and I respect that

  • @daizee106 oh and to answer your question.. us being connected doesn't necessarily mean we are on the same level. I didn't think that point was unclear, but obviously it is to people like you who refuse to believe what's infront of your eyes.

  • @daizee106 first of all, I apologize if my tone was a bit harsh...

you can't be seriously suggesting that darwin is a racist as a way to fault my argument. This is serious stuff, sir. And yeah, I wouldn't comment on Darwin or belive in him without reading the Origin of Species, that's the kind of stuff creationists do. I don't really know what you believe, and I respect your blieves.. but I can't really take you seriously when you call scientists "flawed", when they are our best minds.

  • @cloudincloudout Oh so how do you explain "the origin of the species: the preservation of the favored races" How was darwin trying to connect us to each other when he considered blacks and natives as not evolved???? Have you ever read it? I doubt it, you just go around spewing because you think that science is without flaw/ Look, it seems that we differ on opinions here and I respect that. But I have many reasons for believing what I do and I HAVE read it

  • @daizee106 yah... 'cause darwinians don't ever test out their theories and look for flaws in them constantly. It's not like science is the single most important reason we are where we are today in most of our advancements, including litrature as a matter of fact. Darwin's "theory" doesn't simply explains existance, which some unfortunates like you seem to think..moreover, it provides us with clear evidence that we are all connected.. bacteria to human being... we are all from the same cloth.

  • Darwinians are as hopelessly enslaved to a flawed theology as all the churchies out there. It is a means of social control and nothing else. Anyone ignorent enough to call it science might as well be sitting on the front pew of your local endocrination camp IE church
