There is no doubt that The Jam made a huge impact on music of the late 70's and early 80's and Weller continues to do so. I have always been a massive fan of The Jam but I am sorry to say that in my opinion they didn't do this song justice, The Clash, however, nailed it.
Just my humble opinion so don't reply telling me I am talking out of my arse, if you don't agree with me lets hear your take on it.

Brenda Hollaway version is the best, followed by, Spencer Davis Group, The Clash and the Small Faces. But Im sure there are many other great covers of this classic. The Jam version is a demo that wasnt ment for release. Would have been good to have hurd a good studio or live version by The Jam.

You could also try the Spencer Davis version.

Weller is obviously a huge marriott fan and is superb himself however this is not his best tune.

What's a Mod? AND What's a Punk?.....C'mon!!!!! It's all music and like most Pop/Rock music it attaches itself to a "scene" or a "style". I don't think The Who were originally Mods BUT they were drawn to that scene by their Management at the time to become part of a "happening scene" and make them more popular. These things happen all the time in Popular music. Joe Strummer was into alt country before seeing the future of Rock at a Pistols gig.....that changed him profoundly.

the same type of era coming back, same type of feeling as early 80,s , will be if Tories get back in!!!

Adding a touch of class to the "Rebellion",
Which is what it lacked.

No band touched people of the uk like the Clash and The Jam,speaking as someone who grew up when both band were at their most popular I think you`re unfair on The Clash who embraced many styles ,whereas the Jam remained little englanders(which aint a bad thing)I love both bands.
Thanks for posting ,you have some top tunes

I agree, Although The Jam did move on into some experimental stuff in The Gift album.
