Good question. Supposedly, they delivered the first, "production" version this month to Elon Musk, founder of paypal and big investor in Tesla.
The backlog of 900 sold or reserved will take them long past 2009 to work through, maybe longer.
Once people start seeing them, moreover, orders will go up...especially if you can just put down your money and drive off in one.
